Two weeks ago we visited Dunster Castle and some country villages nearby. There were plenty of chocolate box scenes with beautiful thatched cottages, churches with graveyards and flowers in full bloom. Duster Castle has existed since at least the Norman times and was home to the Luttrell family in the 19th century. The interiors were beautiful, although some rooms were too dark for my tastes. However, there was plenty to take inspiration from. For example, taxidermy, chandeliers, extremely detailed carved wood, decorative textiles and wallpapers, and portraits in gilt frames. The plaster moldings on the ceilings were incredible, some included hunting scenes. I think my favourite room was the library. The wallpaper was a dark teal colour with orange and brown birds, mixed with pink and white floral plaster around the edge of the ceiling. There were comfy chairs and bookcases filled with leather bound books. It also had a view into the conservatory, and then went through to the parlor which was equally as stunning.
